Lees Of Virginia

Lee's of Virginia Guestbook Update 01/16/2012

For those of you that have posted so many of your questions about specific ancestors and individual lineages, I have decided to answer all of you as you have posted by designating a page just for your inquiries. You can now open up a discussion or genealogy question by signing up on the new Forum page.  This forum will give all of us a way to address specific genealogy questions and answers.  I will also be incorporating soon a website blog.   This will be more efficient than emailing you all individually as I have tried to do in the past, but I felt that if there are others out there with these same questions, they may benefit fit also by posting the answers and questions publicly.  Thank you again, as always for your posts and inquiries - and the continuous support you all have shown!  Don't forget to check back periodically, I am always trying to add information and new features to aid everyone with their genealogy needs!

Hello Jacqueline, looking forward to your new book! Any more news on the John Lee Esquire line? Just curious if the DNA study provides any further insight to where the John Lee's descends from. I'm at a block as seems are so many.

I guess I’ll go to my grave not knowing, but does anyone have a clue on who Andrew Lee, born 1770, Botetourt County, Virginia, died Claiborne County, Tennessee was? I have some clues from Y DNA on some of his relationships but no direct line to a father and mother. I know he was on census and tax roles in Botetourt County, Va. In the 1790s and I have his marriage bond to Margaret Peggy Daniel but it doesn’t identify a parent for Andrew. Any clue will be appreciated. Thanks, Garry Lee

Searching for any information on Nancy Lee (1768-1852) of Dorchester County, Md. I came across her name as my 5th GGM while working on my Davis line. She was supposedly born in Maryland in 1768. Dorchester County marriage records show she married William Soward (Seward?) (1759-1848) on Dec 21, 1789. Nancy and William appear in U.S. Widow’s Pension Application files in 1849. Their daughter, Courtney Soward, married John Muse Davis on Dec 23, 1815. Is Nancy Lee of the Maryland Lee family that is connected to the Richard Henry Lee/Virginia Lee family? She may have had a sister named Leah “Leary” Lee. I’d appreciate any leads or information you may have. I’ve searched everywhere but can’t find anything about her parents or siblings.

Do you have any information on Jehu Lee Or Jessie Fitzhugh Lee. I am pretty sure that is my 6th great grandfather. I traced my 5th great grandfather to lincoln co tennessee Daniel Lee and it shows Jehu as my 6th the ancestry people recommended him as a suggestion because my Daniel Lee was born in VA and died in Tennessee.

Wonderful information! R.E. Lee is among the most respected figures in my life. My grandmother, Margaret Davis (maiden name) said we are Lee descendants; however, I have found no evidence to prove it. Many generations of children have Lee as a middle name to keep the connectivity with the Lee family. I've done my family tree but find no evidence, but not convinced that there is no connection.

My mother was a Lee on the paternal side that migrated to Williamson County, Illinois from Goochland, Virginia. I am decended from Henry Tuggle Lee (my 4th great grandfather). So far, I have worked my way back to his grandparents; John Lee and Lucy Braxton. I'm so glad to find this site. I'm very interested in the family history and am looking for future information. I'm sure this will be very helpful.

Hello, my name is Steven Lee Smythe. I would like to take the DNA test you refer to that is not connected to the Lee Family in any way so it would be as ‘honest’ as possible. I don’t know if I truly descend from Col. Richard Henry Lee or not. According to www.familysearch.org, I am. I have strong reservations as to the believability of this info…but I hope it’s true. Thank you, Steve L. Smythe, age 65 P.S. According to familysearch.org, my LEE connection is through Elizabeth LEE & Thomas BEUFORD... So I would like to take the DNA test to confirm or deny the LEE connection.

My Mother was Willa Dean Lee, who said she was a direct descendant of Robert E. Lee. She used the name Willa Deanna Lee as well until she married. She was born in 1924 or possibly 1925 in Louisiana to mother, Pearl, and grew up on a plantation with a brother until after her father's death and her mother had remarried. Then she ran away to live with a relative in Arkansas. My brother and I have tried through the years to get more information from her on that side of the family but all she would say is she was a direct descendant of Robert E. Lee. She passed in 2016. I am still trying to fill in the blanks. Any information welcomed.

working on my Ancestry and trying to connect a family story that Robert E Lee was my 5th cousin and the info I have from my grandmother is a Lucy Lee married a Benjamin Rodgers. Can not find the connection so have hired Ancestry.com to see, and gonna do a DNA test to see if there is a connection. Any information regarding Lucy Lee's would be great. I think the time frame makes the connection the generation prior to Robert E Lee... but the family story was Lucy was a daughter dis-owned by R.E.L. because she married a northerner...

My family tells me that something happened in the past that was "hushhush" but I do know that my Great grand pa came from Virginia the West Virginia, and then to Indiana. He then came to Kentucky and married my Great grand ma, Alma "Elma" Opal Rowland, who's mother was Native American on her mothers side, Rachel Banks. Please help make the connection so I have Information to pass on to my child. Thank you, and God Bless.

Hi! Just thought I'd sign the guestbook, I'm 20 and a Lee descendant. My grandfather was Jack H. Lee, a pastor from Mississippi and then Georgia. I have a big book called "Descendants of Needham Lee" telling all about the history and it goes through the family tree through all the Lees including Henry Lightfoot Lee and Robert E. Lee to my mom's name Rebecca Lee (Darland). She died when I was 13 and was always the one in my family who kept the family tree up-to-date, so now that I actually understand it I'm trying to take up that role some more. Glad I found this site!

I descend from Colonel Richard Lee the Immigrant on my mother's side through William C. Lee, his son Richard Lee, his son Richard Lee II, Esquire (per DNA testing), and his son Jesse Lee, a Revolutionary War veteran. Jesse moved to Georgia right after the war and I am unable to find much information about his children. One of them was either my ancestor Budd Lee, born about 1805 or the father of Budd, because I can trace my mother's line back to Budd. If anyone has any information about the branch of the Lee family that moved to Georgia, I would greatly appreciate you sharing it. Thank you. Richard Bolson

I have hit a brick wall with my Lee family and cant find a chink in the mortar. Farthest back I was able to go was Benjamin Lee b abt 1765 who married Selah (Celia). They lived in Orangeburg County, South Carolina until Benjamin's death in 1818. Selah then moved to Spartanburg County, SC to live with one of her children, VandeVastine Lee. My Lee line stayed in Orangeburg, Benjamin's son Benjamin, who married Elizabeth and is fairly well documented from there.

You have him as married to Catherina Hagy and then married to Louisa Bledsoe, however, my research shows Catherina and Louisa's husbands were born on different years and the births of their children overlapped. I'm thinking they are two different Clements. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Michael R. Norwood ezminer@gmail.com Dear Mrs. Finley, I am so delighted to find your web site. I was doing research on my ancestors and in particular my 7th great grandfather Claibourne Davenport born in buckingham, virginia 1759, died Monticell, Wayne Kentucky 18 of august 1842 . He was married to Mary Agnes Lee, born 3rd of January 1773 in rogersville, Lewis , Tennesse, died 1839 in Saltville, Washington, Co. virginia. according to to your research. I had always knew that the lee line went back to early colonial virginia but your research helped me piece the puzzle together. My Davenport ancestry goes back to the Pamunkey Davenport line , that lived along the banks of the Pamunkey river which was an early land holding of The Richard Lee 1st " the immigrant". Many of the Lee women intermarried with the Davenports in that region before and after the american revolution. The intersection of the two families for me leads back to Claibourne and Mary Agnes Lee. Claibourne was a revolutionary war soldier and lived in saltville Virginia until shortly after 1818. He applied for a pension as a Revolutionary soldier that year. HIs son John N. Davenport moved from Saltville , spending some time in missouri and then eventually settled in the waresville settlement of south texas. Waresville became Eutopia texas. I believe almost all of the Davenports of the Sabinal, Uvalde , texas area descend through this common ancestor. I am curious about your last name finley. Are you related to the Florence finley angermiller that was state representative of uvalde district back in the day. She was a prolific writer and author of Old timers of southwest Texas. Thanks again , Mike

This is an awesome labor of love and family pride. From one American to another and from one Lee to another...Thank you. My grandfather 's name is Euland Jefferson Lee (b: Nov.30,1899 In Jones Co. MS. His father was William Theadore Lee (b: Oct. 7,1859 in Ellisville, MS. From the information I have - his father was James T. Lee born 1835. He was in the Confederate Army and died in New Orleans in 1864. Additional information is suspect (I think) but it leads to Col. Greenberry Lee and Elizabeth Few. with two generations in between. I would like to verify if there is a connection to Col. Greenberry Lee or not. The other generations are L. Nathaniel Lee 1809-1890 from Elbert Co. GA & married to Sarah Chain or Chane. His father supposedly was Thomas Soloman Lee 1790 - 1848 from Sampson Co. NC. He was in the war of 1812. There are many Lees from southern stock and since I am a novice at doing family research... I am going in circles. If you have any information I would appreciate it. I find this more fascinating than reading a mystery novel. Again... Bravo and Thank You. Connie Cheek Kloos(adopted name) Moe daughter of Virginia Louise Lee of Selma, Alabama and granddaughter of Euland Jefferson Lee.

My husband and I are doing research on his side of the family. We've hit a brick wall with the Lee side of the family. I was wondering if you have a John Lee born abt. 1815 in Virginia, and his wide is Hannah Unknown and she was born abt. 1813 in PA. They have a daughter Arrabella Lee and she married Charles Rector in Piedmont, WV in July 1869. My husband and I are planning to go to Berkeley Springs in April to do research. However, if we can find the correct area to go then we will. Thank you so much, Chris Orris

Does anyone have information on John Lee b. 1763 in Harford County, MD and died Aug 1803 in PA? I know pretty much everything about him since he returned from the Revolution, but I can't find his parents or if he had any siblings. I've checked some of your list, but so far, no John Lee of mine is there. Thank you!

According to the book "The Virginia-Ohio Fusons", my gggg grandmother is Deidamia Lee (1785-1863). She married to William Fuson, my gggg grandfather. Her parents were John Lee and Sarah Jane Brazill. The book further states that she was a cousin of Robert E. Lee. I haven't yet found any documentation that Deidamia and Robert were related and would love to know the truth about my relationship. Thank you in advance for any information you may have.

Wow! Am amazed at the quantity and quality of your research! Just wanted to let you know that my son-in-law ( and my granddaughters) are direct descendants of Theodoric Lee, brother of Light-Horse Harry and uncle to Robert E. There are 100's of Lee ancestors, but it's fun having some in our family history. Thought it interesting that you are also related to my direct ancestor, Jacob Miller. I think many are wrong about his parents. His father may be Jacob Miller , Sr. or even Ludwig Solomon back in York. Best regard- Pat Miller Sood

I finally found something on my ancestors! I am related to the Lees because of Henry III Lee. I am not proud of what Robert E. Lee did, but i cannot deny my heritage. Anyway, hi!

Dear Mrs. Finley: I was looking for some information and found your website, which I found very interesting. As you are kind enough to receive and answer questions, I have one for you. I believe i am the descendant of the William Clark who married Lucy Lee on January 8, 1821, witnessed by P. S. Fry with bond posted by Ambrose Lee in Orange County Virginia, as listed in The Virginia Historic Marriage Register, Orange Count Marriages, 1747-1850. I did not see a listing for a William Clark married to a Lucy Lee on your website and would like to know how she is connected to the Virginia Lees. I am told that my William, a Virginian, married a Virginia Lee of your family, which this Lucy should be. This would be the right place and time. Your help would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your assistance Yours truly, Geoffrey Clark

I think I have the same message as Debra Guyette. I am also related to Margaret Lee and Richard Brett and was told that Margaret was first cousin of Robert E. Lee but have no confirmation. Can anyone find a connection through Ludwell Lee as one of my ancestors was named Ludwell Lee Rogers? My Rogers ancestors were from Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Co.'s Virginia. Thanks
